Riverhead Volleyball Hosts Mental Health Awareness Game in Partnership with Ryan’s Team

Riverhead High School volleyball spotlighted wellness on and off the court, hosting a Mental Health Awareness Game in partnership with Ryan’s Team.

The event centered conversation around reducing stigma, encouraging students to check in on one another, and connecting families with support resources.

Before the first serve, players and coaches participated in a brief moment of reflection and a PSA about recognizing warning signs and seeking help. Throughout the evening, fans saw green ribbons and themed warm-ups in support of mental health awareness. Ryan’s Team representatives were on hand with materials about peer support, stress management, and how to talk to a trusted adult or counselor.

Section XI Schools Named NYSPHSAA Schools of Distinction and Excellence

The NYSPHSAA is proud to recognize the Schools of Distinction and Excellence for the 2024-2025 school year.

To be recognized as a School of Distinction, a school must apply for the honor and have 100% of its varsity teams earn the Scholar-Athlete Team Award during their respective sports seasons. The School of Excellence designation is awarded to schools that apply and have at least 75% of their varsity teams achieve this same academic recognition.

Winning schools will receive their commemorative awards at their local athletic director workshop this fall.  To be eligible to receive these prestigious awards, schools must apply following the spring submission of the Scholar-Athlete each school year.

Greenport Earns NYSPHSAA Sportsmanship Honor

Greenport has been recognized as a 2024-25 School of Distinction and is one of only four schools in New York State to receive the NYSPHSAA Sportsmanship Promotion Banner Award.

Greenport High School proudly celebrates student-athletes and teams who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship by recognizing them at Board of Education meetings, providing a meaningful platform for community-wide acknowledgment.

Reinforcing its commitment to the principles of fair play and respect, the district takes the message of “Staying in the Game” seriously.

Any student-athlete or coach ejected from an athletic event must meet with the Athletic Director to reflect on their actions and review any additional consequences before being cleared to return.

In some instances involving parents, a meeting with the Superintendent may also be required before reinstatement, emphasizing the district’s firm stance on accountability and positive behavior in school athletics.

“We are incredibly proud to receive this recognition from NYSPHSAA. This award reflects the shared commitment of our coaches, athletes, families, and entire school community to uphold the highest standards of sportsmanship both on and off the field,” said Greenport Athletic Director Brian Toussaint. “As a small school, we take great pride in the character of our student-athletes and the strong sense of community that defines Greenport Athletics.”

Congratulations to their students, coaches, and community for setting the standard!
