A remarkable high school lacrosse career continues to reach new heights for Port Jefferson senior Owen Whiffen.
Whiffen recently recorded his 800th career save for the Port Jefferson Boys Varsity Lacrosse team, cementing his place as one of the program’s most accomplished goalkeepers. Known for his toughness, leadership, and consistency in net, Whiffen has been a cornerstone of the Royals’ success throughout his career.
Coaches, teammates, and supporters have watched Whiffen develop into one of the area’s premier lacrosse players, delivering clutch performances and serving as a steady presence between the pipes.
The celebration comes alongside another exciting accomplishment for the standout student-athlete. Whiffen will continue both his academic and lacrosse career at SUNY Oneonta, where he plans to compete at the collegiate level while pursuing his education.
The Port Jefferson community praises Whiffen for not only his athletic achievements, but also for the leadership and determination he has displayed throughout his time in the program.
With 800 saves already to his name and collegiate lacrosse ahead, Whiffen’s journey is far from over, and the Port Jefferson community will be cheering him on every step of the way.
Mount Sinai native Joey Spallina continues to deliver on the hype at Syracuse Orange men’s lacrosse.
At the JMA Wireless Dome against Colgate, Spallina recorded his 308th career point in an Orange uniform with a highlight-reel, behind-the-back assist to Michael Leo, who finished the play in style with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter.
With that milestone, Spallina passed Mike Powell (307 points), long regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, to become Syracuse’s all-time leading scorer.
And he’s not done yet. As of April 24, Spallina has pushed his total to 313 career points, continuing to build on an already historic mark.
Congratulations, Joey!
A Smithtown native delivered one of the most dominant individual performances at the Super Sixes tournament, leading all players in scoring while representing Team Australia on the international stage.
Marcus Wertheim, who plays collegiately at Brown University, finished the tournament as the overall leader in goals and total points, recording 25 goals and 30 points for Team Australia.
Wertheim’s scoring prowess was on full display in the Bronze Medal game, where he nearly carried Australia to a podium finish. The Smithtown product scored five goals in the contest, keeping the Australians within striking distance until the final moments of a tightly contested matchup. Team Australia ultimately fell by a single goal to the Haudenosaunee Nationals in a dramatic one-goal loss.
Despite the narrow defeat, Wertheim’s performance stood out among the world’s top players, cementing his status as one of the tournament’s most dangerous offensive threats. His ability to generate scoring opportunities, finish at a high rate, and perform under pressure made him a focal point of Australia’s attack throughout the event.
From Smithtown to the international stage, Wertheim’s Super Sixes showing represents a significant achievement for both his program at Brown and his hometown lacrosse community, highlighting the growing global impact of Long Island-developed talent.

The Port Jefferson Royals Boys Varsity Lacrosse team hosted the Eastport-South Manor Sharks in the inaugural Aidan Kaminska “My Day” Foundation Memorial Lacrosse Game — an event marked by an overwhelming outpouring of support from fans and generous online donations.
Head Coach Taylor Forstell described the atmosphere as one where Aidan thrived: “It was the type of environment where Aidan gave every ounce of his energy to help win lacrosse games. The crowd was lively, and both teams left it all on the field. I hope we can build on today’s success and continue to grow this game for years to come.”
The event raised over $3,000 for the Aidan Kaminska “My Day” Foundation, which supports mental health initiatives and academic resources for high school and college student-athletes nationwide. Every player from both teams received a wellness box, one of the many ways the foundation gives back through scholarships and mental health awareness tools.
A senior captain and former teammate of Aidan shared his thoughts:
“This day was a perfect reflection of who Aidan was as a player and teammate. From Mr. Kaminska’s speech to the fans and former players who showed up, to the wellness boxes we received — it was an amazing experience. I’m already looking forward to coming back next year and being part of the fan support.”
