Brentwood to Launch Bob Hoppey Lacrosse Classic

It’s never too soon to think about warmer weather and spring sports.

This spring will feature the first Bob Hoppey High School Lacrosse Classic hosted by Brentwood Varsity Lacrosse on Saturday, April 7.

The day will showcase eight programs from all across Long Island competing, and will also feature an opportunity for Brentwood alumni Jason Lambert to coach his Smithtown East Bulls at Brentwood for the first time since graduating there as a two-sport star in 1998.

Teams competing include Brentwood, Smithtown East, Massapequa, Northport, Riverhead, Mattituck, East Meadow and Deer Park.

Bob Hoppey Lacrosse Classic Schedule:

  • Brentwood vs. Deer Park @ 10:00a.m. (Green Division Championship Game #1)
  • Smithtown East vs. Massapequa @12:00 p.m.(White Division Championship Game #1)
  • Riverhead vs. Northport @ 12:00 p.m. (White Division Championship Game #2)
  • Mattituck vs. East Meadow @ 2:00 p.m. (Green Division Championship Game #2)

This day of lacrosse is about honoring the memory of the late, great Hoppey, who coached at Brentwood from 1959 to 1988. The Suffolk Sports Hall of Famer won 303 games, nine league titles and three county championships.

William Floyd Lacrosse Player Overcomes Adversity

In a feature story posted on the school district’s website, William Floyd lacrosse player Jake Taylor is profiled for his skill, but also overcoming being born with club feet and hip dysplasia.

“I never even knew about my feet and hip until recently when I found my old casts and braces in my bedroom closet,” said Jake. “I began playing lacrosse, soccer and football at an early age and my parents didn’t think I should know. I had to wear orthotics in my sneakers but I didn’t think it was anything major.”

Now Jake plays in one of the toughest high school lacrosse divisions in the world.
