Each week Section XI will announce a male and female athlete of the week. Nominees are submitted by school district athletic directors.
The athletes of the week for the Week of February 5 are Evelyn Walker from Port Jefferson and Josh Serrano from Amityville.
Female Athlete of the Week: Evelyn Walker, Port Jefferson
Evelyn Walker from Port Jefferson was fouled shooting a three-pointer with 0.9 seconds left in the fourth overtime and made all three free throws to give Port Jeff a two-point lead in its Suffolk VIII win last week.
Male Athlete of the Week: Josh Serrano, Amitville
Amityville’s Josh Serrano scored career point No. 1,500 with a three-point shot against Hampton Bays on Jan. 31.
Serrano has played on the boys varsity basketball team for four years and currently leads the Warriors in scoring and is one of the top scorers on Long Island. His leadership this season helped clinch the league title last week as well.
Previous Section XI Athletes of the Week
- Jared Trefney, Hills East / Nicole Leslie, Huntington
- Raf Lievano, Ward Melville / Ty Zhea Hawkins, Brentwood
- Sean Braithwaite, Center Moriches / Beth Felix, Stony Brook
Beth Felix has been a strong asset for the Stony Brook girls’ basketball team both on and off the court. One of the top scorers in Suffolk with a 22.8 points per game, Felix is also a great leader in her school and in the community. She was honored this past December with a town community service award for raising over $13,000 for a non-profit camp that serves teens. She also started a campaign to provide 10,000 Bibles to non-profit ministries and the underprivileged. She started another program called H.E.L.P (Heroin Epidemic Lifeline Program) for which she has campaigned, raised, and distributed over $18,000 worth of educational materials back to the community and also finds time to maintain a 3.9 GPA.
Sean Braithwaite is averaging 19.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7 assists per game over the last week for Center Moriches. The Red Devils are 6-0 in league play and 14-2 this season. Braithwaite’s consistent play is a major reason by the defending Class B Long Island champions remain the team to beat this year and are poised to make a strong run at a New York State title. Look for Braithwaite to keep up his scoring touch as the season progresses.
