WI’s Craig Coaches 600th, Final Lax Game
Thirty one years. 600 games. 479 wins. One heck of a career for West Islip coach Scott Craig, who coached his final game on Friday, a loss to Connetquot in the Suffolk County playoffs.
“On the high school circuit, West Islip is recognized, nationally, as a premier program,” Craig told Newsday. “Obviously, it’s been a few years since we’ve gotten back to the pinnacle (the Lions’ last Long Island and state titles came in 2012), but I think most people know that Long Island lacrosse — especially the A division — is the cream of the crop.”
Craig was inducted to the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
Huntington’s Flores Wins Tennis Title … Again
Make that two.
Huntington’s Jack Flores won his second straight Suffolk County boys tennis singles championship this week.
Flores beat Abhinav Srivastava from Hills East.
Sportsmanship at its Finest in Section XI
Here’s a great example of sportsmanship in Section XI.
During a routine dual track meet this year, an eighth grader was lined up with an upperclassmen, who usually clocks very fast times.
The elder statesman was aware he was matched up with someone almost five years younger. He turned to him and asked, “what’s your best time?”
Aiden, the eighth grader, said around 12:17. This was in the 3,200.
To which the upperclassman replied, “stick with me, we’re going to beat it today.”
They covered the two-miles stride for stride finishing within a tenth of a second at 12:09, a new personal record for the youngster.
Sportsmanship at its finest.
