Westhampton’s Owen Jessup Wins Section XI Golf Title

This year’s Section XI Boys Golf Individual Championships offered an exciting two days of competition.

We had an extra playoff between Riverhead’s Colby Baran and Westhampton’s Owen Jessup, where Jessup prevailed and was crowned this year’s champion golfer in Section XI.

There was a three-way tie for the 10th alternate spot between Mount Sinai’s Jaxon Caruso, Southampton’s Ethan Heur, and Easthampton’s Nico Horan-Puglia. Caruso prevailed after a two-hole playoff to determine 10th place alternate for states.  In June, the top nine finishers will go to states at Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira.

Top Lax Recruit Alexa Spallina Chooses Syracuse

Mount Sinai junior Alexa Spallina, the country’s top-ranked girl’s lacrosse recruit, has committed to play at Syracuse University.

Spallina will join her three older brothers, Joey, Jake, and Brett, at Syracuse.

“I am extremely excited to announce I will be continuing my lacrosse and academic career at Syracuse University!” she wrote on Instagram. “I want to thank my parents, coaches, teammates, and my brothers for helping me get to where I am today! The future is bright! GO ORANGE!!!”

The High School All-American, All-Long Island, and All-County selection still has plenty of lacrosse left in Section XI with her Mustang teammates. Make sure you head to some games this spring.

Congrats, Alexa!

Section XI Student-Athletes Named Lax All-Americans

Corrigan Sports Enterprises (CSE), in conjunction with Inside Lacrosse, announced the Under Armour Senior All-Americans selected and honored for the class of 2020.

Each player named to the class of 2020 will receive their game jersey from Under Armour to commemorate their selection as an All-American. In addition, the 2020 Senior All-America Game scheduled for Aug. 8 in Baltimore, Md., has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

“While we have had to cancel the 2020 Senior All-America Lacrosse games out of concern for the wellness and overall protection of all event participants, spectators and staff, this is only a momentary pause for these graduating seniors before they become stars in college,” Lee Corrigan, president of CSE said in a statement. “With support from great partners like Under Armour and Inside Lacrosse, we will maintain our passion for lacrosse as we put together plans for outstanding events for years to come.”

CSE will be moving forward with the regional underclass tryouts and tournament for the classes of 2021-2024, starting on August 6-9.
