Section XI Mourns Loss of Baseball Coaching Legend Bill Batewell

Section XI is deeply saddened about the loss of baseball coaching legend Bill Batewell. He passed away in January after battling cancer and COVID-19.

The former Sachem and Bellport coaching great is one of the winningest high school baseball coaches in New York history. He won 558 games, including 452 with Sachem.

His Sachem teams won county titles in 1987 and 1979 and he had numerous former student-athletes play professionally.

A memorial will be held this summer in his honor. More details to follow.

Section XI Alumni: Stroman Named AL All-Star

The successful baseball run continues to Patchogue-Medford alumnus Marcus Stroman.

The ace for the Toronto Blue Jays, Stroman was named an American League All-Star. He will pitch on July 9 in Cleveland.

“It’s amazing,” Stroman told MLB.com. “Definitely one of the bright spots of my career. Just to come from where I came from last year, having probably the worst year I’ve had, battling injuries, I made it such a premium in the offseason to do everything I could to get back. It’s just a testament to everybody around me, my family, my friends, we all operate as one unit. It’s an awesome time for all of us, the staff here. I can’t thank enough people.”

He has turned in a 3.18 ERA over 18 starts and 104 2/3 innings, with 32 walks and 81 strikeouts.

Ward Melville’s Max Nielsen Wins Yastrzemski Award

Max Nielson put the icing on his senior season by winning the Carl Yastrzemski Award as the top baseball player in Suffolk County.

The UConn-bound pitcher was lights out this season in 49 2/3 innings. He struck out a school record 103 batters and compiled a record of 5-1 with a 1.44 ERA.

During his career he struck out a school record 293 and finished with 19 wins, which is one behind Anthony Kay, a pitcher in the Mets farm system now who also played at UConn.

Center Moriches Baseball Wins Class B NYS Title

Congratulations to Center Moriches on finishing the season 26-0 and winning a Class B New York State title for the second straight year.

The Red Devils  beat Schuylerville, 11-1, in front of 1,400 fans at Binghamton University on Saturday afternoon.

According to Newsday, Center Moriches became the fifth team in Long Island history, regardless of classification, to win every game in a season and only the third to win back-to-back state championships since 1983.

Suffolk Baseball Players Top Blue Chip List

They’re just rankings, but they garner a lot of attention around this time of year.

Blue Chip Prospects just released their latest baseball player rankings and there are a number of Suffolk County athletes who rank on top.
