Sayville’s Shane Meehan Named 58th Carl Yastrzemski Award Winner

Sayville High School senior catcher Shane Meehan has earned the highest honor in Suffolk County baseball, being selected as the recipient of the 58th Annual Carl Yastrzemski Award, presented annually to the county’s top player as voted on by Suffolk’s varsity baseball coaches.

Meehan becomes the first player in Sayville baseball history to receive the prestigious award, capping off a remarkable high school career that helped elevate the Golden Flashes to new heights.

A cornerstone of Sayville’s success this spring, Meehan led the Golden Flashes to a Suffolk League VI championship and an 18-6 overall record. At the plate, he posted a stellar .486 batting average and .557 on-base percentage while collecting four doubles, four home runs and 25 RBIs. He also scored 28 runs and stole 12 bases, showcasing his all-around impact on the game.

Behind the plate, Meehan was equally dominant. The senior catcher handled every inning for Sayville over the past two seasons and proved to be one of the county’s premier defensive backstops. This year, he threw out eight of 20 attempted base stealers for a 40 percent caught-stealing rate and picked off five additional runners, consistently preventing opponents from generating offense.

His combination of leadership, offensive production and defensive excellence made him a clear choice for the award and helped establish Sayville as one of Suffolk County’s top programs during the 2026 season.

While Meehan’s high school career will officially conclude when he graduates on June 26, his baseball journey is far from over. He is committed to continuing his academic and athletic career at Stony Brook University, where he will play Division I baseball in the Coastal Athletic Association.

More Than a Game: Hauppauge and Shoreham-Wading River Showcase Sportsmanship and Mental Wellness

Before the first pitch was thrown in the JV baseball matchup between Hauppauge and Shoreham-Wading River, the players found a different way to compete: a friendly pregame game of hacky sack.

For a few moments, there were no rivalries, no game-day pressure, and no distractions. Just student-athletes sharing laughs, keeping a beanbag in the air, and enjoying each other’s company.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, the moment served as a powerful reminder of what young athletes need most: opportunities to step back, connect with others, and simply enjoy the experience.

High school sports are about far more than wins and losses. They are about building relationships, creating lasting memories, fostering mutual respect, and supporting one another both on and off the field. While scores may eventually be forgotten, moments like these leave a lasting impact.

Kudos to both teams for demonstrating the true meaning of sportsmanship and showing that taking care of one another is just as important as competing.

Ward Melville Baseball Coach Reaches 300 Wins

The following story is from Section XI student reporter Keira Kenny from Ward Melville High School.

The Ward Melville boys baseball team has enjoyed a successful season and recently secured a spot in playoff contention. Along the way, longtime head coach Lou Petrucci reached an impressive milestone, earning his 300th career victory after a win over Sachem North on April 29.

Following the milestone, Coach Petrucci reflected on what the achievement means to him and the people who helped make it possible.

“The 300-win mark is one of longevity with great players and families who love the game of baseball,” Petrucci said.

Rather than focusing on personal accolades, Petrucci credited the players who contributed to the program throughout the years.

“I would have to live a million years to pay back all the players that made this possible,” he said. “I never got a hit, threw a strike or made a diving catch in the outfield. The players did everything and they deserve all the credit.”

His appreciation for his athletes has shaped his coaching philosophy throughout his career. Petrucci emphasized the importance of supporting players regardless of the outcome on the field.

“You have to love your players when you win or lose,” he said. “It is just a game played by billions of kids and people all across this great land.”

Petrucci believes creating a positive and enjoyable environment is one of the keys to building a successful program. By dedicating the season to the players and giving them memorable experiences, he said teams can achieve meaningful success both on and off the field.

When asked about the most important lesson baseball teaches young athletes, Petrucci pointed to humility.

“Baseball teaches young players to be humble,” he said. “The highs and lows of how the game is played can come inning to inning and pitch by pitch.”

He added, “Baseball truly is the greatest game on Earth.”

Although 300 wins is a remarkable accomplishment, Petrucci said his focus remains on continuing to positively impact his players.

“My goals are easy,” he said. “I need to continue to work to make positive moments for our players. I continue to look for ways to make every practice fun.”

He also hopes his athletes leave the program with a lifelong appreciation for the game.

“I hope that I have instilled the passion for the game in them,” Petrucci said.

Through his commitment to his players and passion for baseball, Coach Petrucci has built a program centered on teamwork, positivity and lasting memories — qualities that have helped lead Ward Melville to continued success.

Sayville Baseball Hosts Salute the Troops Day

Sayville’s baseball field became a place of pride, gratitude, and community connection as the program hosted its annual Salute the Troops Day, honoring veterans and active military members.

The event brought together players, families, and local supporters for a meaningful tribute to those who have served and continue to serve the country. Throughout the day, moments of recognition highlighted the sacrifices and commitment of military personnel, creating a powerful and respectful atmosphere.

Organized through a collaborative effort between the Sayville baseball program and its booster club, the event showcased the strength of the Sayville community. From pregame acknowledgments to the visible support in the stands, the turnout reflected a deep appreciation for the armed forces.

Beyond the game itself, Salute the Troops Day served as a reminder of the importance of community engagement and honoring those who dedicate their lives to service. The Sayville baseball program once again demonstrated its commitment to using athletics as a platform to bring people together and celebrate a greater purpose.
