Suffolk County Natives Oliveto, Miller Taken Early in MLB Draft

Section XI to the pros!

Congrats to Hauppauge’s Michael Oliveto and Rocky Point’s Cody Miller (East Tennessee State) on being selected by teams in the MLB Draft’s opening rounds.

The Tigers made Oliveto, a catcher, the 34th overall pick. The Braves took Miller, a shortstop, with the 96th pick.

Several Suffolk County natives are still on the draft board and are expected to be picked in upcoming rounds. Good luck to all!

Miller Place’s Nick Frusco Pitches at MLB Draft Combine

Left-handed pitcher. 6-foo-4. Dominant. It’s not a matter of if Miller Place’s Nick Frusco will be selected in this year’s MLB Draft, but when.

Frusco recently pitched at the MLB Draft Combine. He went into the combine unranked but is now slotted 249 for overall prospective picks.

Already committed to Clemson University, his fate could change depending on how high he is selected in the draft.

We’re wishing Frusco luck in the coming months as he embarks on the next chapter of his baseball career … no matter if it’s pro or college!

He had eight strikeouts, and 65 of his 99 pitches were strikes.

Longwood will play No. 3 Smithtown East in the next round.

Updated playoff brackets are here.

Sayville Names Baseball Field in Honor of Barry Fitzpatrick

It was an incredible show of community in Sayville, as hundreds gathered earlier this month to support the Coach Barry Fitzpatrick Field Dedication.

The baseball program also honored all Active Military personnel and Veterans on the same afternoon.

Fitzpatrick coached at Sayville for over 45 years, most notably as the varsity baseball coach from 1978 to 1999. His teams won 316 games and five league titles.

And now his legacy lives on in the Sayville community.

ESM’s Noah Kirwin Throws No-Hitter

Noah Kirwin threw a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts to lead Eastport-South Manor (5-0) in Suffolk V win over Harborfields.

Kirwin struck out the first 13 batters he faced. His only baserunner came when he walked a batter with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Logan Walsh doubled with one out in the top of the seventh and scored the go-ahead run when pinch hitter Jordan Goldhammer followed with an RBI single.

Bridgehampton, Hampton Bays Baseball Play to Support AD Mike DeRosa

Mike DeRosa has ties to the Bridgehampton and Hampton Bays communities, so it is heartwarming to see the baseball programs rally to support one of their own.

DeRosa, the athletic director and a physical education teacher at Bridgehampton, and a Hampton Bays alumnus and resident, was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 glioblastoma and underwent emergency surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his brain.

Fans and community members pledged a donation for each strikeout and base hit the Killer Bees recorded during the series. At the end of the series, donors tallied up the pledges and made the corresponding donation via Venmo or check.

There is also a community-driven GoFundMe that has generated more than $155,000 for the DeRosa family so far.

Section XI sends its thoughts and prayers to the DeRosa family during this difficult time.

Bay Shore Student-Athletes Join Elementary March Book Madness as Mystery Readers

March Book Madness got an exciting boost this year at Gardiner Manor Elementary School, thanks to a special group of student-athletes from Bay Shore High School.

A big shoutout goes to Shani Clark, Briana Sierra, Lily Gargan, Khaleis London, Carter Wilson, Corey Faines, Niall Haughney, and Armani Smith from the boys and girls basketball teams, who stepped up as Mystery Readers for the event.

March Book Madness is a tournament-style reading competition in which books compete head-to-head, and students cast their votes for their favorites—all while sharpening essential reading skills. The presence of these talented athletes added an extra layer of fun and inspiration, as they took time out of their busy schedules to read aloud and connect with younger students.

The visit was a slam dunk for readers and the listeners, proving teamwork and leadership extend far beyond the court.
