Section XI Athletes of the Week: Lynne Gbadamosi & Jake Russo

Each week Section XI will announce a male and female athlete of the week. Nominees are submitted by school district athletic directors.

We took a brief break after the winter season and are back now honoring the very best student-athletes.

The athletes of the week this week are:

Female Athlete of the Week: Lynne Gbadamosi, Deer Park

On April 12, Deer Park’s Lynne Gbadamosi had a season-best throw of 41-feet, 4-inches – tops in Suffolk County – in the shot put and in the same meet had a personal record of 105-feet in the discus against West Islip. Gbadamosi will be attending the University of Albany on a track and field scholarship.

Male Athlete of the Week: Jake Russo, Sayville

Jake leads Long Island with four home runs through April 17. He has hit two home runs against Bayport-Blue Point and Amityville, respectively, this season. The Golden Flashes are 6-3 in Suffolk County’s League VII.

Brentwood Celebrates Hoppey’s Legacy with Annual Event

Brentwood High School recently hosted the first Bob Hoppey High School Lacrosse Classic.

This particular day was about honoring the memory of the late great Hall of Fame coach, Bob Hoppey, while showcasing the game at two very distinct levels. The goal was to have eight vastly different lacrosse communities come together in order to grow the game, while allowing the participants to appreciate and admire their peers and other communities.

The day was truly a celebration of the character and commitment that Coach Hoppey had for the Brentwood community and lacrosse at-large.

Schools who participated were Brentwood, Deer Park, Riverhead, Northport, Smithtown East, Massapequa, East Meadow and Mattituck-Greenport-Southold.

Suffolk Alumni: Floyd’s Murphy Breaks NCAA Record

Suffolk County, William Floyd alum Courtney Murphy is now the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse history.

Murphy, a senior at Stony Brook, scored the record-breaking mark in a 21-3 conference win over Hartford.

Stony Brook is ranked No. 1 in the nation and sports an 11-0 record.

Murphy’s brothers Steve (Notre Dame) and Matt (NYIT) both played college lacrosse.

She was a three-sport athlete in high school staring in basketball and field hockey as well.
