Center Moriches, Port Jefferson Support One Love Foundation

Center Moriches recently hosted a girl’s lacrosse game against Port Jefferson to support the One Love Foundation.

One Love is a national non-profit organization to end relationship abuse. We empower young people with the tools and resources they need to see the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships and bring life-saving prevention education to their communities.

It was founded to honor the tragic death of Yeardley Love by engaging young people through compelling, relatable films and honest conversations around healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors.

Bridgehampton, Hampton Bays Baseball Play to Support AD Mike DeRosa

Mike DeRosa has ties to the Bridgehampton and Hampton Bays communities, so it is heartwarming to see the baseball programs rally to support one of their own.

DeRosa, the athletic director and a physical education teacher at Bridgehampton, and a Hampton Bays alumnus and resident, was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 glioblastoma and underwent emergency surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his brain.

Fans and community members pledged a donation for each strikeout and base hit the Killer Bees recorded during the series. At the end of the series, donors tallied up the pledges and made the corresponding donation via Venmo or check.

There is also a community-driven GoFundMe that has generated more than $155,000 for the DeRosa family so far.

Section XI sends its thoughts and prayers to the DeRosa family during this difficult time.

East Islip Softball Coach Jason McGowan Earns 300th Career Win

East Islip High School varsity softball coach Jason McGowan reached an important milestone on April 2, earning his 300th career win as a coach in a memorable 8-2 victory at West Babylon.

This is McGowan’s 19th season coaching softball, and his milestone total includes prior wins coaching Half Hollow Hills and Plainedge in addition to his 13 years in East Islip.

At the team’s home game on April 4, his appreciative players presented McGowan with a banner congratulating him on his achievement.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have players that believed in me and trusted the process,” McGowan said. “We’ve had some tough, resilient players come through this program and it’s a credit to them for their commitment and dedication to this program.”
