Root for Suffolk Natives in 2018 Winter Olympics

The 2018 Winter Olympics are here and we have three main reasons to watch: John Daly, Matt Mortensen, and Justin Krewson.

Daly, a Smithtown native, is the Olympic veteran of the bunch. Competing in his third Games, he is hoping to best his 15th place finish in the skeleton event at Sochi in 2014.

Mortensen, from Huntington Station, competes in luge doubles, and is making his second appearance after placing 14th at Sochi.

Eastport’s Justin Krewson will make his Olympic debut in the luge.

Section XI All-Star Bowlers Headed to NYS Tournament

Twelve bowlers from Section XI have earned all-star bids to compete in the New York State tournament on March 10-11 upstate.

Suffolk County Wrestling Tournament Info

Get ready for an exciting weekend of competition as the top wrestlers in Suffolk County will be crowned.

The action begins on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. at Suffolk Community Brentwood. There is a $6 admission fee.

The championship rounds will take place on Sunday. See more information below.

Section XI Athletes of the Week: Evelyn Walker & Josh Serrano

Each week Section XI will announce a male and female athlete of the week. Nominees are submitted by school district athletic directors.

The athletes of the week for the Week of February 5 are Evelyn Walker from Port Jefferson and Josh Serrano from Amityville.

Female Athlete of the Week: Evelyn Walker, Port Jefferson

Evelyn Walker from Port Jefferson was fouled shooting a three-pointer with 0.9 seconds left in the fourth overtime and made all three free throws to give Port Jeff a two-point lead in its Suffolk VIII win last week.

Male Athlete of the Week: Josh Serrano, Amitville

Amityville’s Josh Serrano scored career point No. 1,500 with a three-point shot against Hampton Bays on Jan. 31.

Serrano has played on the boys varsity basketball team for four years and currently leads the Warriors in scoring and is one of the top scorers on Long Island. His leadership this season helped clinch the league title last week as well.
