Shelter Island’s Kal Lewis named Section XI Top Male Athlete of Fall
Two-time state champion. It has a nice ring to it, and it’s no easy task.
Shelter Island’s Kal Lewis won his second straight NYSPHSAA Class D cross country championship this fall with a time of 16:23.3 at Sunken Meadow.
For his dominance he is this fall’s Section XI top male athlete.
NYSPHSAA Unveils 2018 XC Logo
It’s still awhile until the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships, but we’re still excited. The event will take place at Sunken Meadow and Section XI is the host region.

Section XI Debuts Athletes of the Week
Section XI is debuting a new “Athletes of the Week” program where each week during the school year we will honor a top male and female athlete.
Nominees are submitted by school district athletic directors.
This week we’re honoring Jared Trefney from Half Hollow Hills East High School, and Nicole Leslie from Huntington High School.
Female Athlete of the Week: Nicole Leslie, Huntington
Leslie recorded a double-double in a win over Centereach and a loss against North Babylon.
She had 17 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals against Centereach, and 17 points, 13 rebounds and 4 steals against the Bulldogs.
Leslie has worked extremely hard over the past few years to reach this personal best and has grown into a strong leader for Huntington hoops.
Male Athlete of the Week: Jared Trefney, Hills East
Just days after spraining his ankle, Trefney won the 55-meter race at the Millrose Games Trials in 6.53 seconds.
This win officially qualified for him for Millrose Games on February 3 at The Armory.
Suffolk Runners Finish Strong at NYSPHSAA Championships
Dozens of student-athletes from Section XI competed in the New York State Cross Country championships at Wayne Central School on November 11.
CLASS A
- Top Suffolk finisher, male: Carlos Santos: 16:52.10, No. 18
- Top Suffolk school, male: Smithtown, No. 4
- Smithtown’s Gabrielle Schneider was the top female finisher with a time of 20:33.30, good enough for No. 23 overall.
- Top Suffolk school, female: Sachem East, No. 7
CLASS B
- Top Suffolk finisher, male: Joey Krause, 17:34.60, No. 29
- Top Suffolk school, male: East Hampton, No. 9
- Top Suffolk finisher, female: 20:07.90, No. 1!

- Top Suffolk finisher, male: Christian Demchak, Mattituck, 17:52.00, No. 31
