NFHS Honors Section XI Coaches

The National Federation of High Schools has announced its coaches of the year winners and Section XI is well represented.

Smithtown East’s Ann Naughton was named national field hockey coach of the year.

Robert Szymanski and Richard Koretzki were named state track coaches of the year.

Lou Hanner from John Glenn was named a sectional soccer coach of the year.

Congratulations to all on their well-deserved honors!

Suffolk Alumni: O’Reilly Caps Off Impressive Career at New Paltz

Sayville alum Justin O’Reilly finished her collegiate career at New Paltz as the school’s all-time leading scorer in field hockey.

Her 43 goals are the most ever and her 99 points are second on the career list.

“Justine’s progression over her four years was everything we could have asked for in a student athlete,” New Paltz coach Shannon Szablinski said. “Her physical fitness, endurance and speed all improved so much. Her speed combined with her dynamic movements and first touch upon reception has made her an incredible attacker. It took her time to get to where she is. She is the epitome of what you want to see from a student athlete over their four years.”

Ward Melville Field Hockey Wins Long Island Championship

Ward Melville defeated Massapequa, 6-0, in the Class A Long Island field hockey championship on Wednesday afternoon.

Kate Mulham and Lexi Reinhardt each scored two goals to lead undefeated Ward Melville to a 6-0 victory over Massapequa on Wednesday for its third straight Long Island Class A field hockey championship.

“It’s obviously an amazing feeling knowing that all our hard work all season starting in August has now paid off in the postseason,” Mulham said. “We’re all excited to continue playing because we play every game for the person next to us and we’re just really glad to keep our season alive.”
