Before you think it, no, Section XI does not have a sanctioned “horseshoe pitching” event, and neither does the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, but this photo is too unique not to feature!
It was a different era in 1940 that’s for sure!
Check out this image above from Westhampton Beach when the school won the Suffolk County Horseshoe Pitching championship.

This archived image is from Riverhead High School and features its contingent of runners who competed at the famed Penn Relays in 1925.
The photo still lives at the high school.

#SectionXITBT: This 1970 North Babylon basketball team won a Suffolk County championship.
On this roster was Dan Allocco, Dave Banks, Jerry Hartz, Gary Kuhn, Lonny Shockley, Jim Stelfox, Wes Wilhelmsn, Ray Brown, Wally Flythe, Kevin Hatcher, Carl Manfredi, Bill Morris and Bill Thomas. They were coached by Mike Cavaliere.

This 1971 Brentwood boys basketball team won a Suffolk County championship and featured some prominent names.
No. 20 on the top row, center, is Mitch Kupchak, who had a 10-year career as an NBA player and served in the Lakers organization from 1986 through 2017 as assistant general manager and general manager.
No. 44 is Frank Urso is one of the top lacrosse players in Long Island history and is a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame after a historic career at Brentwood and the University of Maryland.
Brentwood has had a long history of success in athletics, but its basketball program in the 1970s was a force that it still spoken about today!
#SectionXITBT: This 1993 image of Bobby Hodgson was on the cover of the Suffolk County boys basketball program that season. Bobby was in the middle of an illustrious career at that point.
He finished with 2,532 career points and currently ranks as the third all-time leading score in Long Island boys basketball history. #SectionXI #TBT #Suffolk

The photo is from the archives at the high school and doesn’t have any major historical significance other than it being 111 years old and a unique piece of original sports photography in Suffolk County history.
