It was an outstanding day of competition at the Section XI Girls County Tennis Championships, where Suffolk County’s best players battled for top honors and a chance to make their mark in local tennis history.
After a series of intense matches, Lily Castka of Bayport-Blue Point emerged as the 2025 Section XI Singles Champion, showcasing remarkable composure, athleticism, and consistency throughout the tournament. Her victory caps an exceptional season and cements her place among the county’s elite players.
In doubles play, the Ross School pairing of Lola Dangin and Lilly Weiss claimed the County Doubles Championship, demonstrating strong teamwork and strategy from start to finish. Their chemistry and precision at the net proved to be the winning formula as they powered through a talented field of competitors.
The day served as a celebration of skill, sportsmanship, and dedication, as student-athletes from across Suffolk County displayed the very best of high school tennis.
Congratulations to all competitors on a memorable championship and to the new County Champions – Lily Castka, and the duo of Lola Dangin and Lilly Weiss – on their well-deserved victories!
The Hauppauge Girls Volleyball team continues to show that their impact reaches far beyond the court. Early in October, the Eagles hosted a powerful Dig Pink Game to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research — rallying their school and community together in support of a cause that touches so many lives.
Soon after, that same spirit of compassion carried into their Annual Team Mackenzie Invitational Tournament, benefiting Angela’s House LI and Team Mackenzie. This incredible event brought athletes, families, and fans together to help children and families in need — raising over $11,000 through their collective generosity.
Hosted in memory of Mackenzie Borchers, whose courage and kindness continue to inspire, the tournament is a powerful reminder that sports can serve as a platform for both healing and hope.
Mackenzie’s mother, Tracy Borchers, a longtime Hauppauge teacher, coach, and mentor, has been a cherished part of the community for decades. Her daughter Mackenzie — known for her bright smile and determination — was born with a congenital heart defect and became a beloved presence in the Hauppauge volleyball program. Between hospital stays, Mackenzie would often stop by practices and games to cheer on the team, lighting up the gym with her joy. When she couldn’t be there in person, Tracy and Mackenzie would FaceTime from the hospital just to stay connected with the team and maintain a sense of normalcy.
After Mackenzie’s passing, Tracy created Team Mackenzie as part of Angela’s House’s annual walk, helping raise funds for the organization that provided round-the-clock care and support for her family. When Hauppauge players overheard Tracy mention her hope that Team Mackenzie would always be among the top fundraising teams — as a way to honor her daughter and give back to Angela’s House — they decided to make that wish a reality.
In 2022, the team launched the Team Mackenzie Invitational Volleyball Tournament, turning compassion into action. Now in its fourth year, the event continues to grow stronger each season. Ten schools — South Side, Massapequa, Center Moriches, Smithtown East, Bayport-Blue Point, Ward Melville, East Islip, Bay Shore, Sachem East, and Hauppauge — came together to compete, connect, and contribute to a shared cause.
The tournament includes Team Mackenzie t-shirt sales, basket raffles, and 50/50 drawings, with 100% of proceedsdonated directly to Angela’s House and Team Mackenzie.
Adding to the event’s meaning, Bob Policastro, Founder and Director of Angela’s House and a longtime Hauppauge resident, joined the teams to speak about the impact of their efforts. His message reminded athletes and spectators alike that their participation goes beyond the game — it directly supports families navigating some of life’s toughest challenges.
From Dig Pink to Team Mackenzie, Hauppauge Volleyball embodies what it means to play with heart, purpose, and unity. Each event they host strengthens the bond between athletes and their community, proving that when you play for something bigger than yourself, everyone wins.
The following was written by Jaylene Coreas from Babylon High School, who is a member of our Section XI Student Media team.
The Babylon Varsity Field Hockey team defeated the West Babylon Eagles 1–0, marking the Lady Panthers’ first win of the season — and a sign of more to come.
The dynamic duo of senior Sabina Giambalvo and sophomore Grace Leary delivered the victory in the third quarter. Giambalvo, a consistent playmaker, also scored the winning goal against West Babylon last season in a 4–3 overtime triumph. “To the future of this program, be optimistic, be aggressive, but most importantly, work till the end,” she said.
Leary added, “Before the season’s over, we hope to add another win to our record.”
This victory was significant as it came during Babylon’s annual “Stick It to Cancer” game — a cherished event where players honor those fighting cancer. Dressed in pink, the Lady Panthers played with purpose and heart, channeling their efforts toward a cause larger than the game itself.
Senior goalie Madison Semeraro reflected on the emotional significance: “This has been my second family for the last four years. This game was so special to me. These girls are amazing, and I can’t wait to see what else we achieve.”
With the possibility of a postseason berth hinging on a win against Greenport, the Lady Panthers are determined to make history — the program hasn’t reached the playoffs in several years.
Captains Kiera Ceballos and Julie Goldstein, both four-year varsity players, led with pride and perspective. “We knew from the start this was going to be one of our biggest games,” said Ceballos. “Winning with a shutout shows how well we work together. Rushing the field after the buzzer — those are moments like no other.”
Goldstein reflected on the team’s growth and her leadership journey: “When I was a freshman and sophomore, we didn’t win a single game. Now, as a junior and senior, I’m proud to lead such a coachable group. There’s no stopping us now.”
Senior Katherine Orifici summed it up best: “We proved to ourselves we can do it.”
Through determination, unity, and heart, the Babylon Lady Panthers are rewriting their story — and this victory may be just the beginning.
