Aaron Hubbard Scores First Varsity Points for Greenport in Memorable Moment
During Greenport’s game against Smithtown Christian on Saturday, January 20, in the closing moments of the fourth quarter, Porters’ head coach, Justin Moore, and the Smithtown Christian coach collaborated to create a special opportunity for Sophomore Aaron Hubbard.
Hubbard got the chance to step onto the court and score a basket—a truly memorable moment for him and everyone present.
Hubbard has bilateral club feet, spina bifida and hydrocephalus and overcame great odds to achieve that moment on his home court.
Congrats, Aaron!
Suffolk County Parks Hosting Lifeguard Info Session
Suffolk County Parks will host an info session for youth and adults interested in becoming Suffolk County lifeguards. We encourage you to share this with your community partners, students, local swim teams in High School and college, and staff.
Wednesday, January 31, is the LAST informational session for the 2024 season to learn about an exciting opportunity to become a Lifeguard! The session will occur from 7:00 – 8:00 pm at the Center Moriches Public Library. T
he Suffolk County Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking Youth interested in summer employment at local pools and beaches.
You must have the following qualifications:
- Over 15 years old
- Athletic skills
- Previous swimming experience
New this year, they also offer a Skills Assessment Session on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at the Suffolk County Community College Riverhead Pool. This allows those interested individuals to review the skills they need to be a lifeguard and determine what they can work on before the 24-hour Qualification Course starts in March.
This is a great opportunity for you if you love to swim, go to the beach, and enjoy the summer sun!
Riverhead Auxiliary Gymnasium Dedicated to Walt Stewart

Riverhead High School recently named its auxiliary gym in honor of former longtime wrestling coach Walt Stewart.
From 1950 through 1985, Stewart coached 82 All-County wrestlers and 19 Suffolk champions. Riverhead won 242 dual meets, four league dual meet titles, six league tournament titles, and the 1963 Suffolk County tournament. He also coached football and tennis as an assistant.
Stewart, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II and saw action in the European Theater, was recognized with the Suffolk County Wrestling Coaches Association Grand Master Award, and in 2002, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Rocky Point’s Julianna Hernandez Wins NYS Wrestling Title
Congratulations to Rocky Point’s Julianna Hernandez on winning a New York State wrestling championship at 107 pounds!
Hernandez beat Teegan Sibble from Section V’s Bolivar-Richburg, 5-2.
Leah Jantzen Talks Mental Health for Student-Athletes with ADs
Ward Melville Athletic Director Kevin Finnerty introduced Leah Jantzen, who works as a mental health specialist with student-athletes in Ward Melville, at a recent Section XI Athletic Director’s meeting.
Leah discussed her program and how to implement a mental health program in other schools.

Southampton Hoops Hosts Autism Awareness Night
Southampton recently hosted an autism awareness and acceptance night during a varsity boys basketball game.
A highlight of the night was watching the Unified Athletes perform on the court during halftime.
The gym was decorated by community service club students and parent volunteers. About $6,000 was raised for the Flying Point Foundation for Autism.

Connetquot Alum Makes U.S. National Cheer Team
Connetquot alum Joseph Apisa — already a three-time national cheerleading champion with the University of South Florida — has been named to USA Cheer’s 2024 National Coed Premier Team.
He was one of 32 men and women selected from colleges nationwide to the team.
Longtime ESM Baseball Coach Bob Salamone Passed Away
Section XI is saddened by the passing of Bob Salamone, the long-time baseball coach and physical education teacher at Eastport High School.
Coach Salamone coached baseball from 1975 to 2007. Retiring in 2007, he ranked seventh all-time with 407 wins in Suffolk County.
His teams made 22 consecutive playoff appearances from 1986 through 2007. They won 12 league and Suffolk County titles, five Southeast Regional Class D Championships, and a New York State Class D title in 1986. He was a 12-time league coach of the year and was named Suffolk County Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2006.
