Riverhead Auxiliary Gymnasium Dedicated to Walt Stewart

Riverhead High School recently named its auxiliary gym in honor of former longtime wrestling coach Walt Stewart.

From 1950 through 1985, Stewart coached 82 All-County wrestlers and 19 Suffolk champions. Riverhead won 242 dual meets, four league dual meet titles, six league tournament titles, and the 1963 Suffolk County tournament. He also coached football and tennis as an assistant.

Stewart, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II and saw action in the European Theater, was recognized with the Suffolk County Wrestling Coaches Association Grand Master Award, and in 2002, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
